McCoy’s Building Supply is one of the nation’s largest privately held building supply retailers. Headquartered in San Marcos, Texas, it has provided quality building products and services to its “born-to-build” customers since 1927, and has earned the loyalty of builders, contractors, ranchers, and do-it-yourselfers. The company is led by Meagan McCoy Jones, president and CEO, and the fourth generation in the McCoy family to lead the company. McCoy’s employs more than 3,400 people and operates 87 stores, 5 distribution centers, and 2 millwork facilities in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.
McCoy’s needed a technology partner to support its operation and expansion into the future. After relying on the same solution for decades, transitioning to Workday Financial Management, Workday Human Capital Management (HCM), and Workday Adaptive Planning was an essential shift toward efficiency, strategic growth, and a people-first approach. Here’s how McCoy’s is doing it.
Workday has made us more efficient, since we can now process our invoices, expenses, and capital items in the same system.

Building efficiency.
Workday Financial Management lies at the core of the transformation at McCoy’s. According to Josh Whitley, VP of accounting and controller, the integration of Workday has revolutionized the company’s financial operations and reporting capabilities. Previous disjointed systems hindered efficiency, says Whitley. “Workday has made us more efficient, since we can now process our invoices, expenses, and capital items in the same system.”
Data access is also streamlined. “Natively from within Workday, we can pull our data, put it in a spreadsheet, and import [integrate] it straight back into Workday. Our previous system didn’t do that; it was more cumbersome to extract and import data,” Whitley remarks, highlighting the flexibility and intuitiveness that Workday brings to financial processes at McCoy’s.
The move to Workday not only simplified financial reporting so the team can deliver insights days faster but also provided the flexibility needed to navigate the dynamic and fluctuating building supply market. Now store managers can instantly access financial data, drill down into invoice details, and accurately plan and manage expenses.
Integrating Workday Financial Management into processes at McCoy’s has improved point-of-sale efficiency. “It’s ready when we get here in the morning, so we can start looking at the data right away,” says Cheryl Keene, director/assistant controller. “There are many other integrations we've built with our banks, as well as third parties, that feed details into Workday such as items that have cleared the bank account and credit card activity.”
This visibility and control over financial data underscores McCoy's commitment to efficiency and strategic financial planning.
Charting the future.
Workday Adaptive Planning boosted the planning processes at McCoy’s. Although still in the early phases of deployment, the company’s vision for using Workday Adaptive Planning to forecast and plan strategically is clear. Keene anticipates using its dynamic planning capabilities to be better prepared for what is to come. “We do use it for budgeting purposes but some of the capabilities we’d like to add would help us with predicting and planning for the future, such as interest rates and commodity market pricing,” Keene says.
Workday Adaptive Planning also helps McCoy’s plan for variable sales. “When weather conditions are less than ideal, we see reduced transactions. So being able to predict and analyze the effects of weather patterns on transactions lets us plan our labor and staffing accordingly to offset the spend,” says Ray Gabriel, VP of infrastructure.
The company’s desired approach departs from traditional, often reactive planning methods to embrace a more informed, data-driven strategy that takes multiple influencing factors into account. The objective is clear: leverage the potential of Workday Adaptive Planning to anticipate market conditions, improve sales predictions, and strategically allocate resources.
We can reach out to all our employees with training, updates, and announcements that they can access on their devices. Workday also makes it easier for our staff to grow their careers within the company.

Cultivating talent with technology.
Perhaps the most transformative aspect of the Workday integration at McCoy’s lies in its Workday HCM and Workday workforce management solutions. These systems have streamlined recruitment, onboarding, training, and time tracking for the company.
The comprehensive Workday platform supports everything from applicant tracking to onboarding, learning management, and beyond—providing a cohesive and user-friendly experience for both HR teams and employees.
The Workday mobile app provides employees with real-time access to their schedules, giving them both visibility and control. Additionally, Gabriel points out, “We can reach out to all our employees with training, updates, and announcements that they can access on their devices. Workday also makes it easier for our staff to change jobs and grow their careers within the company. It’s helped with retention in an industry that typically has a high turnover rate.”
A path forward.
The company’s journey with Workday underscores a strategic transformation toward integrated financial management, advanced planning, and comprehensive workforce management, aligning strategies across departments. While there are always learning curves, the impact of Workday solutions is evident in improved efficiency, enhanced decision-making capabilities, and a workforce empowered by accessible and transparent processes.
As McCoy’s continues to navigate the evolving landscape of the building supply industry, Workday is a key committed partner in the company’s success. With Workday Financial Management, Workday Adaptive Planning, and Workday HCM, McCoy’s is not just keeping pace with change but also driving forward with confidence into the future.
Whitley says, “The amount of innovation and change within just the tasks we do on a daily basis in Workday has been dramatic to see. That gives a lot of confidence about where the software is headed for the future to support us as business users.”
